21st Century Skills-Weds. Staff Development

Check out Ed Caughlin's slides about how life has changed over the past 40 years. Brainstorm what skills students will need to succeed for this new future. (15min.)

What are 21st century skills?
With a partner from your grade level read over one of the skill areas and brainstorm what activities at the K-2 level would look like to strength and teach these skills. (10 min)

Next meet with your grade level (form 2 groups of 4) to share your ideas. (5 min per person).

Which skills are you already doing a stellar job with? Which were more difficult to think up activities for? Which would you personally like to strengthen?

For an indepth discussion on each skill see Literacy in the Digital Age

Samples of Authentic Learning at Water Habitat Project and at Quilt Project

Starting your own project
1. What product would you like to make or have your students make?
2. How will stdts benefit from this product?
3. How can technology support you and your product?
4. How will other teachers be able to access the knowledge/product you have created?
5. What standards will your product address?
6. What 21st century skills will be encorporated into your product?
7. What resources (equipment, training, time, etc.) will you need to accomplish your goals.

Sample Projects
-Build a web page or a blog to publish student work and share learning with parents and the community.
-Build an intervention program with HelpMe2Learn or Accelerated Reader.
-Build support for your science/social studies with multimedia like streaming video or slideshows.
-Make HM more interactive and authentic by building a database of Kidpix or Kidspiration lessons.
-Enhance reading practice by making "book videos" using iMovie.
-Extend learning with independant center activities like free online games.
-Build projects that integrate cross-curricular standards with Powerpoint or Word.
-Create teacher presentations that include multiple learning modalities with Keynote, Powerpoint, or iPhoto.
-Investigate and implement project based learning in your classroom.
-Create a database of lessons that employ differentiated instruction.
-Come up with your own idea!

My first technology goal is to implement AR reading in the classroom using the computer in the classroom, accessed through the server in the lab.

Eva, you have done a wonderful job with technology at Woodland. I am very happy that we are so lucky to have you with us at Woodland El. My idea for a project would be to post a question and answer to the students. I especially like the idea of using student numbers.

Great presentation. We would like to get to know the needs of our class first. At this time we are unsure of a project idea.

I'd like to work with Rebecca on an assessment based skills test for the students in our classes. You know, take some of the K assessments that we do that require little cards for matching, etc., to be on a program where their responses can be recorded while I am able to watch the class still.

I would really like to take digital photos throughout the year and make a year long comprehensive slide show, burn it on disks for my students and play it at open house.

Kristin Fredriksson and I will do a project together to make an assessment page for our students. We're going to try to take some of the assessment tools and transfer them to the computer and do it there. What a time saver and mess reducer!!!

I'd also like to do a home page for my classroom for parents and kids to access.

Eva, I think I'm getting motivated! I'd like to make a web page or blog. I like that students can comment in the blog and they are posted. I think parents would appreciate this, and I could post newsletters as well. I do get concerned about using names of students, and want to ensure that I follow any rules for this. Anyways, this is my idea. I'd also like to learn how to create a slideshow of pictures for back to school night and open house. I've always liked to walk into rooms and see slideshows or movies. Thanks for your hard work today!

I would still like to make a kind of slide show of the Sound Spelling Cards. This would include the picture of the card, with sound ( " Name it", "Say it", "Spell it"). I dislike having to point up high and put my back to my students, because I want to see who is participating. I also think it would be nice to go between the two different styles in order to keep the interest going.

I would like to make a video-slide show dvd that I can duplicate and share with students & parents of different events and learning experiences over the course of the year.

I would need some tutorial help from a techie otherwise I see myself getting bogged down. Would there be someone to help me?

I would like to finish the Martin Luther King project that I began in your iMovie class. I would like to video the kids throughout the year and make a movie. I would like to create a movie telling time with the kids as the characters. I would like to take photos and create a slide show. I would like to video the children role playing appropriate ways of dealing with conflict in class or on the playground. I would like to have the children create movies like you did reading their favorite books...........that's not all. I hope to begin with MLK first!
