I am sure that everyone would agree with me that going to CUE as a tech team was an amazing experience! I hope that everyone will make sure to give a big thank you to Lauren for making it happen this year. There were many incredible people speaking at the conference, including Chris Walsh who did some amazing things with Google, Ted Lai ( I can't say enough about him and Podcasting), author/illustrator Peter Reynolds was inspiring and charismatic and our own Eva Wagner with her mom Deborah Ferguson! We had some great opportunities to connect with other leaders and learn about new cools tips and tricks.

OC CUE

OC CUE was a lot of fun.
I had a good turn out for my Movie Magic class and a small turnout for Top 10 sites for Kids but I was happy that I showed great sites no one had heard of before.

I also attended a session on United Streaming and there are a lot of new features and a Teacher Center that I would have never known about or thought to use in my class. They also have a network available called the DEN (Discovery Educator's Network) that is a free sign-up and gives you access to teacher made powerpoints using videos, plus opportunities to meet and brainstorm with other educators.

It was great to have Woodland represent! 7 of our teachers went and will hopefully share their experience with you. We made out with a good share of the prizes as well, including an AlphaSmart, Laker Tickets, a pen drive and more!:)

For our 2 meetings in October please make sure that you not only cover all of the items listed under your project but also make sure everyone can do the following:
INTERNET (Mandatory Module)
To satisfy the Internet module, you will need to show that you can perform each of the following skills using Safari,
Internet Explorer, or Firefox.
 Launch a browser and use the tool bar
 Specify URLs
 Conduct basic searches
 Copy, paste and save from web pages
 Download files
 Set a homepage
 Maintain and organize Favorites/Bookmarks
 Refresh/reload pages
 Hide, display or configure toolbar
 Use and manage multiple windows
 Identify whether a source is credible
 Grab digital images from a webpage and insert into a document

I recommend using FireFox because it has an easy to use interface for blogging so you don't have to enter so much code.
For download files, please have everyone go to the district web builder Sign up and download the permission form to get a website. Fll this out. Please collect and put in my box by the second week of Oct so when our Nov.1 Staff Development Day arrives we all have websites.Thanks!

Switch to Firefox

Okay, so I've been resistant to change from Safari for at least 2 years now, (change is hard for me too!) but after hearing all you'll ask things about the blogs like how do I change the color of the text or underline something, I decided I would check into it and yes it is way easier in Firefox. You can easily add links, change font, size, color, add bullets and center things.
Besides Firefox is what the district uses for accessing their staff only page, and the teacher web builder. So I've been convinced and hopefully I've convinced you as well. I will put in a work order to see if Andrew can download it to everyone, but if you want to jump on the bandwagon here is the link.

NECC Vendors/Keynote Speakers

I won't try to pretend I am as adept at visiting vendors as Nancy. (Did she really see all 1000+.) But I will share the few that I did drag myself to.

Document cameras have come way down in price and have so many more features than they did just 3 years ago. Document cameras, when used with a projector, project anything from realia to worksheets so students can see just about anything in a larger format. They are more than just the 21st century overhead projector, as they capture images on 360 degree axis, can be used with the lights on or off, and even connect to microscopes-but at $499 they cost about the same as an overhead. The best ones I saw were at Avermedia

Pokemon Learning League launches Aug.1st for a free trial. It's for 3-6th grades, but is web-based standards-driven interactive animated lessons and they gave out cool pencils:)

Lintor had some cool hard back covers for those class book you make with iPhoto books, power point slide shows, etc. They range from $2.60-3.90 a cover depending on size.

I took a look at EvanMoor's Take it to the computer and TCMs TechTool Kits and have decided I'm done with random "standards based" technology integration programs. Personally, I think they are nothing we couldn't do ourselves better. But ours would be specifically aligned not only with our standards and content, but with our grade level, our programs and most importantly our pacing plan.

We visited promethean and signed up for their new website. We are very excited to be getting our ActivBoards next year and look forward to them coming out for training as well. (Good free stuff at the booth too:))

RIF or Reading is Fundamental has a cool site for kids. They can read so many books over summer and get a chance to win a $10 gift certificate to Target. Who doesn't want that! They also said they have fun games, contests and prizes all year long.

Probably the coolest project I saw, were some 5th graders from Mexico who were demoing games they made to share what they had learned about ecosystems. They were using something called Authorware from Microsoft and making something just as good as what the vendors were selling. I asked one boy if he was going to sell this, he grinned sheepishly and said in his thick accent "Maybe later.":)

KEYNOTE
Weds' keynote speaker, Dewitt Jones was wonderful. His message of seeing what was right with the world was inspiring as always. He also talked about living with passion and having a vision and how to make it a reality by gaining the right skills, being in the right place at the right time, and being open to all possibilities.

Thurs' keynote speaker, Nicholas Negraponte, talked about his endeavors in making the $100 laptop. He made some interesting points about doing things big so more people get on board and his intial refusals from vendors to help until they learned how many units he was producing. It was also wonderful to see a very successful capitalist doing something to make the world a better place.

LEARNING TO PROBLEM SOLVE W/ TECHNOLOGY

I came across these notes as I am cleaning house and have no idea what book they refer (but if I find out I'll post it), still it looks like a great book, so I thought I would post them. Especially since their is so much excitement about technology, its important to remember it is one tool among many that make great teaching. But the tool alone doesn't do that, it all in how you use it.

IMPORTANT CONCEPTS
-Students learn from thinking about problems
-Problem solving is real-world learning (a problem is unkown and finding the unknown has value-that's human nature)
-Technology offers problem solving experience thru info searching, model tasks/context, decision making, and designing

HOW: Technology as...
1-support tools to represent ideas, or organize ideas
2-information vehicle
3-context (simulate real-world problems)
4-a social medium (collaborate, connect)
5-an intellectual partner by offering students the opportunity to reflect

They are currently putting together a tech incentive plan to provide funding for technology to support teachers as they move their school forward, towards our shared technology vision. THURSDAY
Today is Thursday and I've pretty much camped out at the Apple Session in Sierra.
9:30 Learned some cool things about Keynote. Handouts
How to make interactive, non-linear, multimedia projects. You need the new version to do hyperlinks, (Inspector-Document-Presentation), but basically it turns it in to a new old Hyperstudio project. Talked about designing your own ending to Fairy Tales to make a Choose your own adventure story using story spines or Kidspiration planning sheets

11:00- iDVDs Handouts
Create as a video yearbook and use as fundraisers for tech budget. Would love to do this one as an afterschool class.
Also a cool use of Keynote to circle things on a photo were modeled.

12:30 Started at Pages (could be cool for Christmas cards,have students take a photo and add a poem) but left to join Janet English's Science session. She was using the Vernier thermometers to do science experiments. Kids were placing thermometers in their hands to take temperatures and then excercising and taking them again. They were surprised to find that their temperatures went down and they continued to adjust their experiment to make it more precise. I loved the way she used what happened in 1st period to launch 2nd period instead of just starting over. I could see how it created a community of learners within her science classes. She used a book by Vernier to get examples of lesson ideas.

2:00 Learned how to do a Podcast in GarageBand3- an application that I NEVER use, is now seeming irreplacable! It's super easy to use effects, record sound, drag and drop images or video and export to iWeb. The best part was that as you layer tracks they automatically fall into fade mode when your vocals are come in! Too Cool!

VENDORS
Friday we visited the first half of vendors. We saw Vicki present the activBoard and Votes for Promethean. We really need to have her out for a staff development.

Peter Reynolds has some good software out. His Stationery Studio looked really fun, just glorifyied and simplified word processing, but that's perfect for K-2 ($70 for 1, lab pack-35 for $850). Also he has a really cool professional development series.

Evan Moor had 10 titles of activities on the computer call Look, Learn and Listen. Great for ELLs but also covered a lot of K social studies standards. $30 per title, school license$140)

NECC was there, promoting the San Diego Conference ($145 before Mar. 31st)

Have to admit I did a bit of session hopping:( but it worked out for the best.

The obvious enlarging text, color coding, highlighting, different colored background and auto summary.
Using the thesaurus tool in Word to make "meatier" sentences was cool. Highlight a dead word like "make", right click and use Thesarus for more ideas like "compose". Also a cool idea, use power point for sight word flashcards, set a time and voice over and see if kids can beat the computer- would be great for HMDay #5 Review

K-2 Social Studies Lesson
Cool mapping lesson. Disposal cameras were sent home so kids could take pictures of their house to put on a class neighborhood map. Students measured distance from school on the map with strips and then compared them by placing them shortest to longest. Could also be done with Google Earth or have kids make a power point presentation of where they live and label the rooms in the house for EL.

SATURDAY
Very distracting to be a presenter and try to attend sessions:) My sessions went well and I think Nancy and my mom, Debbie, are ready to give it a shot next year. At the end of the day, we attended a session about KidPix and some templates that a teacher had made that she was selling with her book. And the debate came up, we tech-loving teachers put in a lot of time to make all the tech projects we've done, and while who wouldn't want to make a bundle$$$ on it, should we with the vision be more interested in making these activities available to teachers so students can benefit? We did end up buying the book, for research purposes:), and you know teachers-we can't resist having something in our hands for support.

HM Tech Resources

There are such a wide variety of resources available on the web today: lesson ideas, printable worksheets, online games even instructional videos. It's all out there at the click of a mouse, if... you have the time to wade thru the vast unknown and pick out that which is appropriate and relevant to your curriculum, your language arts program, your kids! Well let me help you pare it down a bit. I have 2 websites that I think are terrific resources and one that I put together (that I'm hoping you'll add to) that is specifically organized around Houghton Mifflin.

First let me narrow down our vast search of the internet for HM resources be saying this- if it's not interactive, it's not worth the time. For me a true technology resource takes advantage of the multimedia delivery of information to kids and to me as the teacher. So that is the one guideline I have. Let the searching begin.

HM WEBSITE
I started of course with the HM website, which at the time was not all that great (though it has definitely improved) and didn't include a lot of K resources.
Highlights:

are mostly geared for older grades

The IT dept. has asked that we change our email password ASAP. I believe in the future, passwords will expire and IT will be notifying you when you need to change them. You can change your password www.nmusd.us/changepassword or if your password has already expired or you forgot it you can call the help desk at x4357 (0ption 1).

IT suggests you make your password a phrase like "ihaveadream" but passwords may not be reused during the year. I suggest making it something you hear all the time on a monthly basis like your HM theme title (colorsallaround) or a seasonal phrase (happythanksgiving) If you have to write it down please don't leave near the computer. The best way to remember you password is to use it everyday by checking your email daily:) Thanks for your cooperation!

A word about viruses and the Mac...

Macs don't get viruses, well they are NOT effected by them. (Oh how we love our Macs) so don't worry too much if a word document has a virus. I have put in a campus wide work order to get rid of them, but your mac should function as normal. The bad news is you can pass it on thru an email to PC users. PC users should have some sort of virus protection, but be careful none the less.

What are 21st century skills?
With a partner from your grade level read over one of the skill areas and brainstorm what activities at the K-2 level would look like to strength and teach these skills. (10 min)

Next meet with your grade level (form 2 groups of 4) to share your ideas. (5 min per person).

iMovie Class for NMUSD

So glad you made it to my blog. Since we are going digital (paperless) I thought it would be nice to have one central location to find all the help you need to make a movie.

Getting Help
A great resource is Atomic Learning.They can walk you through every step of making a movie. They have a very detailed section on Camera Basics where you can learn to shoot better pictures. Don't forget there is also help at the apple website and of course the help menu in iMovie itself. And don't forget, you can email me anytime!

Getting Started
A key in making a movie is to decide on the message you want to send and the audience you want to send it to. You can enhance student learning by using video to support curriculum for your students or you can help them synthesize what they have learned, having them express themselves "digitally". A movie can contain video, still photos, or student drawn pictures as well as voice overs, music or sound effects. You can see some excellent examples of movies made by students and teachers at ilife in the classroom. There is also a great handout with10 tips for Capturing Great Video

You can still make a movie without a video camera. You can capture photos with a camera or download images, video and sound from the internet. There are great (free) images at Kitzu.com
and images, video and sound at schoolhousevideo
and of course united streaming, but you do need to pay for an account for that.

Getting it into iMovie
Once you have the meat of your message, its time to put it together. There are 3 ways to import Footage:
1. Directly From the Camera-just plug in and hit the import button
2. From Your iPhoto Library-select the photo button or import from the file menu
3. From a disk or other file-Just drag and drop or use the import from the file menu. If i'm working with a lot of different media, I find it easier to put everything in its proper place (ie. still images in iPhoto, music or voice recordings in iTunes, etc.) before getting started in iMovie

Cleaning it up
Just a few notes on...(or things I've learned the hard way)
SAVE OFTEN!!! Also check the available memory at the bottom right hand corner. If that goes red you will have problems saving and it will quit on you. Make sure the trash is empty (and make sure you don't need any of it) to free up space.

On Editing...
Be aware that the Ken Burn's effect will be automatically applied to all still images you bring in.
You are suppose to be able to drag from the end of a clip to shorten it. Make sure your view is "big" in the timeline view and if it still doesn't work, then just split the clip and delete the part you don't want.

On Adding Titles...
Drag the name of the title (not the words you typed) to your clip viewer right on top of the image you want it on. It may split your clip, but don't worry it will still play seamlessly.

On Transitions...
If the red bar is still working on rendering your transition, you can't see your changes yet or save your movie.
Transitions eat up some of your clip time, so when you are filming try to remember to add extra footage-you can always cut down, but you can't stretch it out.

On Audio...
I usually wait until the end to do this, although you can lock your audio to your clip so it doesn't get separated when you do transitions (supposedly). One cool trick is to separate your clip and its audio, (Advanced-Extract Audio) then you can have narration over other images.

Getting it out of iMovie
In iMovie 5 (HD) it is File-Share (Export on earlier versions). Here you have a number of options. You'll probably most often use the QuickTime at CD-ROM or Full Quality.
To burn to a disk:
1. Insert your blank disk (-R). A pop up window might ask you if you want to open it. Just click okay.
2. Drag your movie to the disk. It will have a QuickTime icon and end in .mov Wait for it to copy over.
3. Drag your disk to the trash, which turns into a burn icon. Click burn.
4. Wait for it to finish burning and drag it to the trash to eject.

What does Eva do when she comes into my classroom?
Well so far this year... I have updated all internet ready computers to OSX and installed (remotely) KidPix, Kidspiration, Appleworks and Microsoft Office. I have also created accounts for teachers and students that will require a log in for security reasons. If your computer is not on your desk, it will auto log in as a student. Student emacs are designated with a red dot. (Yellow means CD writing and Green means DVD writing). Student machines have a limited dock (no internet in dock, but still available) and limited user power. See me if you need adjustments.

Please note that technology equipment is costly and we only see a return on our investment if it is used. While we are committed to having every classroom equipped with a internet ready teacher station, equipment beyond that is a priviledge and if not utilized will go to a classroom that will use it. In other words, use it or lose it!:)

Mostly for upper grade but Commotion in the Ocean (K+), Old Mac's Farm (K+) and Pepperonit Pizza Palace (1&2) were age appropriate for Woodland students. Not only is it a great educational tool, but they use student's responses as research into how students think. Check it out!!!
